The 15th of Ramadan holds a very special and sacred place in Islamic history. It is the birthday of Imam Hasan ibn Ali (RA), the beloved eldest grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), and one of the most honoured personalities in all of Islam.
Imam Hasan (RA) was born in Madinah on 15 Ramadan 3 AH, corresponding to approximately 625 CE. He was the eldest son of Imam Ali (RA) and Bibi Fatimah Zahra (RA), the beloved daughter of the Prophet (SAW).
When the happy news of his birth reached the Prophet (SAW), he came at once to his daughter’s home, took the newborn baby in his arms, recited the Adhaan in his right ear, and the Iqamah in his left ear. Following divine command, he named the child Hasan, meaning “Excellent.”
The name “Hasan” in Arabic corresponds to Shabar, the firstborn of Hazrat Haroon (Aaron), the brother of Prophet Musa (Moses), a deeply meaningful connection across prophetic lineages.
The Prophet (SAW) loved Imam Hasan and Imam Husain deeply, often carrying them on his shoulders and declaring to the people, “Hasan and Husain are the leaders of the youth of Paradise.” He also said, “Hasan shall have my form and my nobility, and Husain shall have my generosity and bravery.”
Growing up in the household of the Prophet (SAW), Imam Hasan received his education directly from the greatest teachers of Islam — the Prophet himself, Imam Ali (RA), and Lady Fatimah (RA). He memorised the Quran from childhood and absorbed the deepest prophetic wisdom and moral guidance.
Imam Hasan (RA) made one of the greatest sacrifices in Islamic history, relinquishing the caliphate to prevent unnecessary Muslim bloodshed and civil war, thereby saving the unity of the Ummah at a critical moment.
He passed away on 7th Safar, 50 AH, at the age of 48, and was laid to rest in the Baqi cemetery in Madinah.
On this blessed 15th of Ramadan, Muslims around the world remember a man of extraordinary patience, generosity, nobility, and love, truly worthy of being called the grandson of the greatest Prophet (SAW).
