Former Speaker of Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani Passes Away

Agha Siraj Durrani, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, passed away in Karachi after battling a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of an influential era in Sindh’s political landscape. Durrani had been unwell for several weeks and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, where his condition reportedly deteriorated over time. He breathed his last on October 15, 2025, surrounded by close family members and party associates. His passing has left a deep void not only in his party but also among the wider political and legislative community in Pakistan.

Born on October 5, 1953, in Garhi Yasin, district Shikarpur, Agha Siraj Durrani belonged to a prominent political family. He received his early education at St. Patrick’s High School in Karachi and later graduated with a degree in Commerce. He went on to earn a law degree (LLB) from Sindh Muslim Law College. Durrani’s political career began in the 1980s, and he quickly rose through the ranks of the PPP, becoming known for his loyalty to the party and his strong support for democratic norms. He was elected as a member of the Sindh Assembly multiple times and served in various ministerial roles. His most prominent political role began in 2013 when he was elected Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, a position he held with distinction until early 2024. He also briefly served as acting Governor of Sindh on multiple occasions.

Known for his firm but fair conduct in the assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani earned respect from across the political spectrum. As Speaker, he maintained decorum in the house and ensured that legislative processes were conducted smoothly. Despite political turbulence during his tenure, he played a vital role in strengthening democratic practices in the province. His leadership was marked by commitment to constitutional values and advocacy for provincial rights within the federal structure of Pakistan. He was also regarded as a seasoned parliamentarian who mentored many young politicians within the PPP and beyond.

In recent years, Durrani faced legal challenges, including cases initiated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), but he maintained his innocence and continued to play an active role in politics despite health issues. His death triggered an outpouring of grief from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens alike. Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and former President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over his demise, acknowledging his lifelong dedication to public service and his contributions to the party. Condolences also poured in from opposition parties, reflecting his cross-party influence and stature.

Agha Siraj Durrani’s funeral prayers were attended by a large number of political workers, government officials, and members of the public. His burial in his hometown of Garhi Yasin brought together mourners from across the province. His legacy as a firm believer in democracy, a guardian of parliamentary integrity, and a loyal party man will be remembered for years to come. His passing is a great loss not only to the PPP but to the democratic fabric of Pakistan.
