A tragic accident in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area has left a 19-year-old girl dead after her burqa got caught in a motorcycle chain and she fell off. The victim has been identified as Umm‑e‑Hani, and the incident happened near Firdous Shopping Mall, police and rescue officials said.
According to reports, Umm-e-Hani was riding on a motorcycle when the lower part of her burqa became entangled in the rear wheel and chain sprocket. This caused the bike to lose balance and crash, leading to her suffering serious injuries. She died instantly at the scene.
Rescue teams arrived soon after the accident and transferred her body to a nearby hospital. After necessary legal and medical procedures, her body was handed back to her family.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the risks faced by female passengers wearing loose garments on two-wheelers. Experts say that bike owners must install proper chain and wheel guards to prevent clothing from getting caught, a recurring hazard especially for women wearing long clothes or burqas.
Local residents and road-safety activists are calling for stricter safety checks and awareness campaigns. They argue that such preventable tragedies could be avoided if riders and families paid attention to safety measures.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of how small oversights, like unsecured clothing or missing safety covers on bikes — can lead to devastating consequences.
