Basant Craze? Lahore’s Most Expensive Rooftop Set at Rs. 1 Crore for 3 Days

As Basant returns to Lahore after an 18-year ban, rooftop rentals have reached unprecedented levels, with prime locations in the historic Walled City commanding prices between Rs. 2.1 million to Rs. 5.5 million for just three days of the festival.

Rooftop spaces in key areas such as Delhi Gate, Bhaati Gate, Mochi Gate, and Rang Mahal are in highest demand due to their panoramic views of the festival celebrations. A survey revealed that agents have been booking rooftop spaces weeks in advance, with some exclusive spots fetching even higher rates due to overwhelming demand.

A senior official at a local bank in Lahore revealed his bank paid nearly three million rupees to secure a rooftop that would accommodate around 150 to 200 people overlooking Lahore Fort, with arrangements for food stalls, music performances, and kite flying. Even five-star hotels have secured rooftop spaces in the Walled City to host special events, further driving up rental costs.

The exorbitant prices reflect not just location but extensive preparations. Rooftops have been decorated in vibrant Basant colors, walls painted yellow with floral designs, and equipped with searchlights for night-time kite flying, along with elaborate food and beverage arrangements. Separate menus featuring barbecue, malai boti, mutton tikka, sweets, and dry fruits have been prepared for day and night celebrations.

Even public sector buildings have joined the rental market. Surprisingly, some schools and the historic General Post Office on Mall Road have made their rooftops available for rent during the festival.

The soaring costs demonstrate Lahore’s deep cultural passion for Basant, despite government safety regulations including bans on hazardous strings and mandatory motorcycle safety rods.
