Age is just a number, and 91-year-old Catalina Mendoza from El Salvador has just proved it to the entire world in the most beautiful way imaginable. For the very first time in her nine decades of life, she has walked through the doors of a classroom, sat down at a school desk and begun learning to read and write, as a first grade student.
At 91 years old, Catalina Mendoza has enrolled in school for the very first time, beginning first grade in El Salvador as part of a national education initiative aimed at expanding opportunities for learners of all ages. She recently received a tablet and school supplies through a programme from El Salvador’s Ministry of Education that provides learning materials and technology to students across the country.
What makes this story even more heartwarming is that Catalina is not sitting in that classroom alone. Her 71-year-old daughter, Teresa Tobar, is also a student at the same school, Centro Escolar El Congo in Santa Ana Este, where she is currently completing the eighth grade. A mother and daughter, separated by twenty years in age, both chasing the same dream at the same time.
Catalina herself expressed pure joy at the experience, saying she had never even seen the inside of a classroom before and was now enjoying every moment. She had recently learned to read and write for the first time in her life. Her daughter Teresa said it was her mother’s greatest dream, and that when Allah takes her away, she will leave this world completely fulfilled.
El Salvador’s Ministry of Education has been actively working to modernise its education system in 2026, launching new teaching formats as part of a broader educational reform aimed at making learning accessible to every citizen regardless of age or background.
Catalina’s story is not just about going to school. It is about the human spirit, the part of us that never gives up on a dream, no matter how many decades pass. She sat in that classroom surrounded by children young enough to be her great-grandchildren and smiled the biggest smile in the room.
