Bollywood has a new storm brewing, and it has nothing to do with box office numbers or casting controversies. It has everything to do with truth, propaganda and the responsibility of filmmakers to society. And one of India’s most respected actors, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, has started that conversation in the most direct way possible.
Speaking at NDTV’s Creators’ Manch Season 2 on March 15, 2026, Nawazuddin Siddiqui was asked about the rise of narrative-based cinema. He dismissed the trend entirely, saying: “Nahi, jhoothi filmein ban rahi hain hamare yahan. Fake filmein ban rahi hain. Yeh sab jaante hain. Duniya mein kya ho raha hai, sab jaante hain. Asli sacchai kya hai, yeh bhi sab jaante hain.”
In simple words, he was saying that false films are being made in Bollywood, everyone knows it is fake, and fake narratives are being deliberately set to mislead people.
His comments came up while discussing how movies can influence people, especially now with all the tension between the US, Israel and Iran. He pointed out that audiences are smart, they know what is real and what is just a set narrative.
While Nawazuddin avoided naming specific titles, his remarks sparked a firestorm on social media, with netizens widely interpreting them as a dig at recent blockbusters like Dhurandhar and The Kerala Story.
Nawazuddin’s comments came amid Bollywood’s rising polarization, where most commercial films increasingly present extreme ideological narratives as entertainment. While many praised the actor for his bravery to speak up, others accused him of promoting selective outrage.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has spent his entire career fighting for authentic storytelling, from the gritty lanes of Gangs of Wasseypur to the raw emotion of Manto. For him, cinema is not a tool for propaganda. It is a mirror held up to truth. And right now, he believes that mirror is being deliberately distorted, and he refused to stay quiet about it.
