The world of Japanese animation lost one of its greatest voices on March 6, 2026. Tsutomu Shibayama, the beloved director of the Doraemon franchise, died at the age of 84 after battling lung cancer. Animation studio Ajiado announced his passing, confirming that a private funeral was held attended only by close family members.

Shibayama was born on March 9, 1941. He joined Toei Animation in 1963 and later moved to A Production in 1966. He worked as an animator on programs such as Obake no Q-Taro and Kyojin no Hoshi, eventually working his way to the position of director. He co-founded the studio Ajiado in 1978.

Shibayama served as Chief Director for the Doraemon television anime series from 1984 to 2005 and directed 22 feature films based on the franchise. Among his notable works are Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil and Doraemon: Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey. His other significant directorial works include Chibi Maruko-chan from 1990 to 1992, Nintama Rantarō from 1993 to 2012, and Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori from 2006 to 2007.

Many social media tributes recognized his contribution and called it the “End of an Era.” Shibayama believed in his audience, especially younger viewers. He never simplified the emotions or lessons, instead allowing children to connect with Nobita’s flaws and find meaning in his journey. For billions who grew up watching Doraemon, his passing marks the end of a truly golden chapter in animation history.
