Pakistan Observes Earth Hour: PM Directs Nationwide Lights Off

Pakistan joined the world today in observing Earth Hour 2026, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directing citizens across the country to switch off all non-essential lights for one hour as a powerful symbolic gesture for our planet.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed that electric lights be switched off to the maximum extent possible across the country from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on March 28 in observance of Earth Hour 2026, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to environmental protection and climate awareness.

The prime minister instructed all ministries, divisions, provincial governments and public institutions to participate actively in the global campaign under this year’s theme, “Give an Hour for Earth.”

President Asif Ali Zardari also urged the nation to participate, encouraging citizens to switch off non-essential lights for one hour and use the time to reflect on conserving energy, protecting the environment, and supporting sustainable living efforts.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the province-wide Earth Hour observance, urging citizens to take part with “full enthusiasm” in the global call for energy conservation. On her directives, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb oversaw the campaign across the province.

This year’s Earth Hour marks the 20th anniversary of the campaign. Communities across the globe were encouraged not only to switch off lights but also to take practical steps supporting sustainability, biodiversity protection, and climate action.

Multiple landmarks in Islamabad, including the President’s House, Prime Minister’s House, Parliament House, Supreme Court, and Pakistan Monument, participated in the symbolic switch-off.
