Activist Zafar Abbas Calls for Nobel Peace Prize for PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Asim Munir

Social activist Zafar Abbas has stirred considerable debate after publicly stating that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. His comments come in the wake of Pakistan’s landmark role in brokering a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, a diplomatic breakthrough that many believe prevented a catastrophic regional war.

The background to this recognition is significant. With less than two hours remaining before a US military deadline that threatened devastating strikes on Iran, PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir helped secure a simultaneous ceasefire accepted by both sides. US President Donald Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, just before his deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe military action.

Abbas is not alone in this view. The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) also called for the Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir for their ceasefire efforts.

Former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni emerged as one of the most prominent international voices calling for Pakistan’s recognition, stating that Pakistan should receive the Nobel Peace Prize for its role in securing the truce.

A resolution has also been introduced in the Punjab Assembly recommending Nobel Peace Prize nominations for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, commending their diplomatic efforts in de-escalating tensions between the US and Iran.

The statement has generated lively debate on social media, with supporters calling it well-deserved recognition and skeptics questioning whether Pakistan’s role was truly decisive or merely that of a helpful messenger between the two powers.
