True love is not just about words; sometimes it means giving a part of yourself, literally. A heartwarming and inspiring story from Pakistan has touched millions after a husband donated half of his liver to save his dying wife’s life.
Shabbir Ahmad, a resident of Southern Punjab, chose love over all odds when his wife was diagnosed with a life-threatening liver condition. Despite facing resistance from his family, who advised against the procedure, Shabbir remained steadfast in his decision.
In a separate historic case, doctors at Shifa International Hospital performed Pakistan’s first-ever successful living donor liver transplant for colorectal metastasis. A woman from Karachi had initially been diagnosed with cancer in the lower part of her colon, which later spread to her liver. Her husband donated the left lobe of his liver to save her life, and the woman is now completely cancer-free.
Liver transplants are complex and risky procedures, both for the donor and the recipient. The liver is a unique organ in that it can regenerate itself over time, making living donation possible. However, donors still face significant surgery and recovery periods.
In Shabbir’s case, the transplant was a success, and both are now on the road to recovery. His selfless act eventually won over his family, who are now proud of his courage and sacrifice. The couple is currently enjoying a new beginning filled with love, gratitude, and hope.
