A bizarre and widely shared story took the internet by storm in February 2026, three men were reportedly arrested in Algeria after attempting to sneak into Spain disguised as sheep inside a livestock truck. While the tale sounds like something from a comedy film, a closer look at the facts reveals a more complicated picture.
According to reports, the suspects were trying to cross the border illegally by hiding inside a truck transporting livestock. In an effort to avoid detection, they allegedly wore sheep costumes to blend in with the animals being transported. The plan reportedly failed during a routine inspection when border officials noticed unusual movements among the animals.
Some of the “sheep” were said to be walking upright on two legs, raising suspicion among officers. Upon closer examination, authorities discovered that three of the animals were actually men wearing disguises.
The three men were identified as Algerian nationals between the ages of 25 and 30, facing charges of immigration fraud and possible prosecution for animal cruelty for disturbing the livestock.

Keyword searches led to fact-check articles debunking a similar claim from 2025, and the images had actually been taken from a TikTok video that appeared as early as July 2024.
Searches through Europol announcements and European media archives found no verified reports of anyone arrested in Algeria or Spain for crossing borders in animal costumes. The clip shows people dancing to the theme of the children’s show “Shaun the Sheep”, not a smuggling operation.

Departures from Algeria dominated the route, despite the two countries not sharing a land border. While this specific story appears to be false, the broader crisis of dangerous migration from North Africa to Europe is very real and deeply serious.
