Ramadan is the month of giving, and every year across Pakistan, millions of Muslims pay their Zakat with deep sincerity and care. But this year, one unusual question asked live on a Ramadan TV show has gone viral and sparked a genuinely important Islamic debate across the country.
A caller named Ahmad from Sialkot asked a scholar during a live Ramadan transmission: his girlfriend is facing serious financial difficulties, can he give his Zakat to her during this blessed month?
The question immediately went viral on social media, with people reacting with laughter, surprise, and genuine curiosity. But underneath the entertainment value lies a real and important Islamic ruling that every Muslim should understand.
Islam clearly defines who can receive Zakat. Eligible recipients include the poor, those struggling financially, people burdened by debt, travellers in distress, and individuals working to distribute charity. Zakat should not be given to immediate family members whom you are already financially responsible for, such as parents or children.
The key point here is the concept of financial responsibility. If a relative, or in this case, a person in your life, is so distant that you have no legal Islamic responsibility to provide for their living expenses, you can pay your Zakat to them directly, provided they are genuinely in need and fall below the Nisab threshold.
A girlfriend, as an unmarried woman outside the immediate family, falls outside the category of dependents that a man is legally obligated to support in Islam. However, scholars typically point out that the relationship itself is impermissible in Islam to begin with, which creates a separate and more serious issue altogether.
According to Islamic guidelines, the donor has the option to give their entire Zakat amount to one eligible recipient or distribute it among several deserving individuals. The core objective of Zakat is to support those who are genuinely in need.
The scholars on the show handled the question with both Islamic knowledge and wisdom, reminding viewers that while the financial need of any deserving person can be addressed through charity, it is equally important that all relationships in one’s life are built on the foundations that Allah has prescribed.
