From Viral Rescue to Permanent Monument: How a Human Chain That Saved a Dog in Kazakhstan Inspired the Whole World

Some stories are so full of heart that the world simply refuses to forget them. In 2016, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, a dog fell into a fast-moving river channel and was unable to climb out because of the dangerously steep and slippery concrete banks.

When a group of people spotted the dog trapped in rushing waters below a floodgate, one brave man waded in to guide the dog back toward the wall, but when the pair reached the steep edge, both found themselves stranded and unable to get out alone. That’s when people on the bank raced to link arms and formed a human chain, pulling and struggling until both the man and dog were brought to safety.

A video of the rescue quickly went viral, attracting around 15 million views on the Daily Mail’s Facebook page and a further 6.5 million views across other social media platforms, with international television networks also covering the story.

A decade later, the world chose to honour that moment permanently. In March 2026, an art installation commemorating the dramatic rescue was unveiled on the Ulken River in Almaty, near the very site where it happened.

The sculpture recreates the rescue scene exactly, and in a beautiful detail, the hand of the final figure is deliberately extended beyond the railing, so that any passerby can take hold of it and literally become part of the human chain.

The installation was privately funded with no city budget involved, and its concept is built on the ideas of mutual support, solidarity, and unity, values, as its creators said, close to the heart of every resident.

A dog, a stranger, and a chain of helping hands, proof that humanity at its finest needs no introduction.
