‘I Have Directed the Police to be Sesitive to the Grief of People, and Treat the Protestors with Compassion and Respect’: CM Maryam Nawaz

As Pakistan witnessed a wave of emotional public protests following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2026, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif stepped forward with a message of calm, dignity, and compassion, directing law enforcement to handle the situation with great sensitivity.

In a statement posted on X, Maryam Nawaz said, “I have instructed police and administrative officials to understand the sentiments of the demonstrators and deal with them in a respectful manner.” The statement was widely shared and praised for its measured and humane tone during an emotionally charged time.

The Chief Minister acknowledged the collective grief felt by Muslims, saying, “Every Muslim is mourning and shedding tears at this tragic moment.” At the same time, she emphasized that maintaining peace and security in the country remains a top priority.

In a remarkable gesture of empathy, she also announced that arrangements for Iftar are being made for those participating in the protests. The announcement touched many hearts, as it showed that the government was not treating the protesters as a threat but rather as grieving citizens deserving of care and respect, especially during the holy month of Ramzan.

Protests erupted in several major cities, including at the US Consulates in Karachi and Lahore, and reports indicated that additional demonstrations were expected at the US Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate General in Peshawar. The US Embassy in Islamabad confirmed it was closely monitoring the situation.

The statement by CM Maryam also reflects a broader policing philosophy she has championed since taking office. Earlier in February, she had directed a complete overhaul of police behaviour, ordering officers to treat every citizen with dignity and professionalism. “Police officers exist to serve the people, not intimidate or harass them,” she had said in a high-level televised meeting with Punjab’s Inspector General of Police.

She had also approved the installation of panic buttons outside all police stations to ensure immediate redress of complaints and enhance public safety.

CM Maryam Nawaz’s response to the Khamenei protests was widely seen as a model of compassionate governance, balancing law and order with deep respect for the public’s emotions during one of the most sensitive moments in recent regional history.
