“I Rejected a Role in Veer Zaara Since My Son Was 3 Months Old”: Nadia Jamil

In a touching revelation that resurfaced this Women’s Day during a Ramadan transmission on Green TV, Pakistani actress Nadia Jamil shared one of the most extraordinary career sacrifices in Pakistani entertainment history — turning down a lead role in Bollywood’s iconic blockbuster Veer Zaara to stay home with her newborn son.

Nadia recently appeared on Green TV’s Ramadan transmission for Women’s Day, where she shared this deeply personal story about motherhood and a defining career moment.

The film was originally envisioned by the late legendary director Yash Chopra with Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Nadia Jamil as the three leads, but Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee stepped in when both women were unavailable.

Nadia had just given birth to her first child and was completely captivated by her baby. Her family was fully supportive, her mother even offered to travel with her for the entire shoot. But Nadia took a path less chosen. She left the film and stayed with her baby. She was told this was career suicide, but her career was never as big a priority for her as her child.

Nadia explained her thinking clearly, she knew that if she moved in that direction while her son was barely three months old, it would become an addiction she could not leave, and it would shape the kind of mother she would become. She said there is simply no comparison between being a mother and being an actress.

Despite the sacrifice, Nadia said she stands by her decision completely to this day, even though the role was pivotal and strong in the film’s narrative. She also gained a lifelong friendship with Yash Chopra and his family, a bond she holds very dear.
