Imam Ali’s shrine in Najaf Illuminated in Red Lights to Honour Khamenei’s Martyrdom

In one of the most emotionally charged scenes of the night, the sacred Imam Ali (AS) shrine in Najaf, Iraq, one of the holiest sites in the Shia Muslim world, was dramatically illuminated in deep red lights following the confirmation of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on the night of February 28, 2026.

In neighboring Iraq, the holy shrines lit red lights, symbolizing the call for vengeance and revolution. The powerful visual sent a deeply symbolic message to the world. In Shia tradition, red light carries a meaning of sacrifice, blood, and a call for justice, the same symbolism used during the mourning of Imam Hussain (AS) at Karbala.

Pilgrims at the Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine in Najaf reacted with grief to news of the reported martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Videos showed worshippers gathering at the shrine, offering prayers and expressing sorrow.

Similarly, pilgrims at the Imam Hussain (AS) holy shrine in Karbala also reacted with grief, with worshippers gathering at the shrine and offering prayers.

Following the announcement of Ayatollah Khamenei’s martyrdom, the Governors of both Karbala and Najaf declared Sunday, March 1, 2026, an official public holiday.

In Iran itself, the scenes of mourning were equally powerful. At the same time as the announcement of Khamenei’s martyrdom, the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS) was draped in black, and with the declaration of national mourning, the flag atop the dome was changed.

Iran’s government declared 40 days of public mourning and a seven-day nationwide public holiday to commemorate Khamenei’s death.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a fierce statement vowing revenge, declaring: “A devastating and offensive operation, the most destructive in Iran’s history, will begin soon. Trump and Netanyahu have crossed the red line. They will have to pay the price for this.” The Islamic Information

The red lights of Najaf on this historic night became the most powerful image of a world that changed forever on February 28, 2026.
