Iran’s New Supreme Leader Lost His Father, Mother, Wife, Son, Sister, Niece and Nephew in Last Seven Days

History has rarely seen a moment like this. The man now leading the Islamic Republic of Iran, one of the most powerful positions in the Muslim world, has just buried his father, his mother, his wife, his son, his sister, his niece, and his nephew. All within seven days. All because of bombs.

Mojtaba Khamenei lost several close family members in the US-Israeli strikes on the Khamenei compound on February 28, 2026. His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the initial strikes. His mother, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, was critically injured and died on March 2. His sister, one of Ali Khamenei’s daughters, was killed.

His son was also reported killed in the operation. His niece, a granddaughter of Ali Khamenei and reportedly a minor, was also killed. Additional family members, including a daughter-in-law and son-in-law of the former Supreme Leader, were also reported dead.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56 years old, is the second son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He was reportedly not present at the compound during the strikes and survived. Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the 88-member clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s supreme leader, formally named him as Iran’s third Supreme Leader.

The appointment of the very figure US President Donald Trump had publicly branded “unacceptable” appeared to be a deliberate act of defiance, a clear signal that Iran’s leadership has no intention of surrendering to American pressure, and is instead doubling down on a hardline course with the Revolutionary Guards firmly behind the new leader.

Despite this staggering personal loss, Mojtaba Khamenei has now taken charge as the most powerful leader in Iran, a man carrying the weight of an entire nation’s grief alongside his own.

In all of history, few leaders have ever taken power under such devastating personal circumstances.
