A well-known religious scholar has shared a powerful message to change a common custom in Pakistan. In a recent Instagram reel, he asked people to stop serving big meals after funerals, known as janaza. He said this practice hurts families who are already in deep pain.
“People take big loans to buy food and feed hundreds of guests,” the scholar explained. “They worry what others will say if they don’t do it. But this is not what our religion wants.” He pointed out that Islam teaches us to keep things simple during sad times. The family of the person who passed away should not have to spend money or work hard on cooking. Instead, friends and neighbors should bring food to their home to help them.
The scholar told real stories to show the problem. One family borrowed money for meat, rice, and sweets, even though they could not pay their own bills. Another had to sell things from their house just for the funeral meal. “This adds more sadness. The real way to help is with prayers and quiet support,” he added.
Many viewers agreed in the comments. “I will tell my family no more food at janaza,” one person wrote. Others shared how this custom makes poor families feel ashamed. Mosques in some cities are now putting up signs that say prayers are enough, no meals needed.
Our faith says funerals should be quick and easy, with focus on the soul, not the stomach. The Prophet showed us to avoid extra costs. The scholar ended by praying for strength to follow true teachings.
