Makkah’s Clock Tower Lights Up in Green and White with ‘Ramzan Mubarak’ to Signal Beginning of Ramadan

The iconic Makkah Clock Tower (part of the Abraj Al Bait complex) lit up in vibrant green and white lights on the evening of February 17, 2026, marking the official start of Ramadan 1447 Hijri in Saudi Arabia. This spectacular display, visible from kilometers away, signaled the sighting of the Ramadan crescent and welcomed the holy month with joy and spirituality.

The world’s largest clock faces, atop the 601-meter tower near the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram), are illuminated using 21,000 green and white LED lamps. These lights traditionally flash during the Adhan (call to prayer) five times a day and are specially activated for major Islamic occasions.

Videos and photos shared on Instagram, X, and TikTok show the tower glowing beautifully against the night sky, with some posts mentioning an inscription or display reading “Ramzan Mubarak” (Ramadan Mubarak) as part of the festive welcome. The Grand Mosque complex was also adorned with Ramadan lights, creating a peaceful, magical atmosphere as Taraweeh prayers began that night.

Saudi authorities confirmed the crescent sighting on February 17, making Wednesday, February 18, the first day of fasting. The tower’s illumination serves as a powerful symbol, blending modern engineering with Islamic tradition, to unite Muslims worldwide in celebration. Green represents paradise and growth in Islam, while white symbolizes purity, making the colors perfect for the blessed month.

Social media erupted with “Ramadan Kareem” messages, shared videos from pilgrims, and heartfelt captions like “Makkah right now as we enter the first night of Ramadan.” This annual tradition reminds millions of the spiritual significance of Ramadan, fasting, prayer, charity, and reflection, starting right from the heart of the Muslim world.

As the holy month unfolds, the glowing clock tower stands as a beacon of hope, unity, and devotion for all.
