Veteran television actress Abida Baig, best known for her role in the classic PTV drama Sona Chandi, has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for financial assistance after claiming she lost her life savings and home.
In a recent video statement circulating on social media, Abida Baig said her property was taken from her and that she no longer has the means to pay rent.
Expressing distress, she stated that her entire savings were invested in the house, which she now alleges is no longer in her possession. She urged the provincial government to intervene and provide relief.
Abida Baig rose to prominence in the 1980s through Sona Chandi, a drama widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s most memorable television serials. Despite her contribution to the entertainment industry, she says she is now facing severe financial hardship.
The case has sparked renewed discussion about the lack of structured welfare support for senior artists in Pakistan. While various artist funds and government initiatives exist, many performers from earlier decades have publicly highlighted difficulties in accessing timely assistance.
So far, there has been no official statement from the Punjab government regarding her request. The situation has drawn public sympathy, with many calling for stronger social protection mechanisms for aging artists who once played a significant role in shaping Pakistan’s television history.
