A truly unusual incident in Degana town’s jewellery market in Rajasthan, India, drew attention last week when a pigeon flew off carrying a gold chain worth nearly Rs 1 lakh.
The moment surprised shopkeepers, workers, and bystanders as the bird swooped in and grabbed the precious chain before taking flight, triggering a brief scene of shock and confusion.
The situation unfolded inside a busy jeweller’s workshop where craftsmen were working on gold ornaments. Without warning, a pigeon entered through an open space and picked up the newly made chain in its beak, much to the disbelief of everyone present. People immediately rushed to follow the bird, hoping the valuable piece could be recovered.
The bird spotted in the viral videos was seen perched on a nearby rooftop with the gold chain, drawing a crowd of locals who watched and waited.
After some time, the chain slipped from the pigeon’s grasp and fell onto the roof, where it was quickly retrieved by the jeweller and others present. No damage was reported to the precious jewellery, bringing a wave of relief to everyone.
Shopkeepers later noted that, although this rare event happened during a period of high gold prices, it ended without financial loss. Traders also said the unusual episode became a talking point across the market and on social media, with many joking about the pigeon’s newfound taste for gold.
The incident, while odd, serves as a light-hearted reminder to jewellery sellers to stay alert, even to the unexpected wildlife visitor.
