Legendary Indian Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92

India has lost one of its greatest musical voices. Legendary Bollywood playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined Indian cinema for decades, passed away in Mumbai aged 92. She died at Breach Candy Hospital, where she had been admitted for extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

Hospital officials confirmed the cause of death as multi-organ failure following a cardiac arrest. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news outside Breach Candy Hospital, announcing that the last rites would be performed at Shivaji Park.

Asha Bhosle’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary musical journey spanning over eight decades. She began singing at the age of ten, debuting in a 1943 Marathi film before entering Hindi cinema in 1948.

Her career encompassed over 12,000 songs, earning her the Guinness World Record in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history. She was also honoured with India’s Padma Vibhushan and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.

Born in 1933 into the musical Mangeshkar family, Asha began singing professionally at age nine. Her stature in Hindi film music was rivalled only by her elder sister, the late Lata Mangeshkar.

Together, the two sisters were the dominant female voices in Bollywood for half a century. Indian President Droupadi Murmu described her death as “an irreparable loss to music lovers,” and tributes poured in from across the entertainment world.
